When you have diarrhea, the best thing to do is drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration and replace lost fluids and electrolytes. You can drink water, sports drinks, or broths. If you’re feeling sick to your stomach, try drinking ginger ale or lemonade. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, as they can make diarrhea worse.
Another way to help your body get rid of the infection is to eat light and bland foods. These include boiled potatoes, toast, rice, pasta, cooked chicken or fish, applesauce, and bananas. If you are having trouble keeping anything down, try drinking a rehydration drink such as Pedialyte or Gatorade. These drinks contain electrolytes that can help replace what you are losing through diarrhea. If your diarrhea lasts more than a day or two or if it is accompanied by nausea and vomiting, see your doctor.
